A slap delay, or a slapback echo, is a studio-created echo. You have probably heard it on older rock ‘n’ roll records, especially used on the singers voice. It’s typical to 1950’s Sun Records releases, and Sam Phillips - the owner of Sun Records - have sometimes been credited for inventing it by re-feeding the output from the playback head of a tape recorder to the record head.
